Acupuncture for Low AMH

What’s AMH?

AMH (Anti-Müllerian hormone) is the most recent measure of fertility. It is a relatively  accurate marker of a woman’s Ovarian Reserve which reflects egg quantity. In some cases, it may also be possible to determine egg quality although an AMH test is generally not considered a definitive marker for the quality of eggs.

Female Fertility

I have a low AMH level – what does that mean?

If you find that you have a low level of AMH you should consider a few things before you get too concerned:

1. It could be improved.

2. It does not mean you cannot get pregnant.

3. It does not mean you will not do well with IVF.

4. You should try to conceive as early as you can or consider the possibility of freezing your eggs.

What about AMH and IVF?

If you are planning on undergoing IVF an AMH protein level test can predict if you are at high-risk of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS).

AMH may also be a factor in the decision about the protocol to use in either ovulation induction or IVF, the number of embryos to transfer and the prognosis of your IVF success rate.

For other women who wish to know more about their long-term future of fertility AMH and the Ovarian Reserve test is useful in respect to assessing fertility. In my practice, I have seen women who possess healthy AMH levels. However, I have also seen some women in their late 20s and early 30s who already have low AMHs. I usually advise these women to consider trying to conceive sooner rather than later.

Can AMH be improved with Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine?

In my practice I unfortunately see many patients with multiple failed IVF cycles. Some of these patients have low AMH levels and usually their response to IVF treatment are poor. They have either got very few eggs (<3) or have had a very low fertilisation rate. Part of my treatment for this group of patients is to improve their AMH level. Some patients do see a significant increase in their AMH levels, some cases have doubled and others have been even higher, following acupuncture and Chinese herbal treatments. As a result, these women have had a better response to subsequent IVF cycles and some of them even got pregnant naturally before starting IVF. In my Melbourne acupuncture clinic, I have also had patients conceive naturally with AMH levels as low as 1 following acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine treatments.

Recent clinical research completed in China also found significant improvement in AMH levels in Premature Ovarian Function Failure patients after 3 months of Chinese herbal medicine treatment. (Chinese Journal of Information on TCM Apr.2011 Vol.18 No.4)
