Endometriosis

A common cause of infertility amongst women of child bearing age, endometriosis is thought to affect 6-10% of women. Many women are not aware that they suffer from this condition until they try to conceive, whilst others can suffer almost constant pain. In western medicine treatment for this condition is both invasive and disruptive of the body’s natural capability to heal itself. It involves either surgical intervention to manually remove the tissue or artificial hormone treatments. Acupuncture can be utilised as an effective treatment for many of the symptoms associated with endometriosis, including infertility.

What Can Acupuncture Do?

Acupuncture has helped many women manage the symptoms of endometriosis and successfully conceive.
Endomtriosis
This kind of treatment works through restoring balance to hormones and improving blood flow. This has been shown in some women to improve reproductive health, enhance the immune system to improve its function in breaking down endometrial cells and relieve stress and disruptions to the body’s natural energy flow. Acupuncture is particularly successful in reducing pain, stress, nausea and infertility associated with this condition.

How Does Acupuncture Help?

Treatment of endometriosis with acupuncture works in a number of ways including:

Increasing Blood Flow
Endometriosis is recognised in Chinese medicine as a blood stasis condition, where blood is flowing into areas it shouldn’t. In the case of endometriosis, blood flow to the pelvic organs is compromised causing pain and infertility. Improving blood flow to these organs nourishes them with the oxygen, nutrients, and hormones necessary for conception.

Reducing Stress
Stress compromises your body’s natural systems in a number of ways; it depletes your immune response and disrupts the hormone balance which plays a crucial role in reproduction. By stimulating particular areas of the body acupuncture can reduce the production of stress hormones and strengthens the immune system, enabling it to attack endometrial cells.

Regulating Hormones
Engaging with the endocrine system is one of the major ways acupuncture works. By regulating the hormones responsible for ovulation, and reducing the production of hormones like testosterone which can interfere with this process, acupuncture can help to regulate menstruation, and prime the reproductive organs for conception of a healthy foetus.
