How Can Acupuncture Help?

Acupuncture can be an effective treatment for PCOS related infertility. With a holistic focus on cultivating optimum health in a patient, acupuncture focuses on improving the function of various systems in the body which can be impeded by this particular medical condition. PCOS related infertility stems from problems the condition causes with ovulation. In traditional Chinese medicine, PCOS disrupts the body’s meridians through which qi (life force) flows. By correcting imbalances in these meridians, acupuncture can be used to treat the symptoms of PCOS related infertility.

How does it Work?

Acupuncture for PCOS related infertility works by regulating the menstrual cycle which is often disrupted by this condition. This is achieved in two major ways.

Decreasing Sympathetic Nerve Activity

Part of the natural function of the nervous system, sympathetic nerve activity plays an essential role in artery constriction. In sufferers of PCOS have increased levels of sympathetic nerve activity, which reduces blood flow and reproductive system function. In some studies, acupuncture has been shown to significantly decrease muscle sympathetic nerve activity and increase blood flow to the uterus and ovaries. Improved blood flow brings more nutrients and hormones to the reproductive organs which in turn increases the likelihood of conception and a healthy pregnancy.

Regulating Hormones

Acupuncture can be used to regulate and improve the activity of hormones which play a role in ovulation. In particular, acupuncture normalises menstrual function and ovulation by regulating the follicle stimulating hormone as well as testosterone and other androgens. Excessive levels of these hormones are often present in the bodies of PCOS sufferers and are a common cause of fertility problems.
